Our latest project focuses on the Mushar community, one of the poorest and most socially excluded groups in Nepal. This initiative is more than just about building schools; it’s about breaking cycles of poverty and discrimination through education.
The plight: The Mushar community, predominantly residing in the Southern part of Nepal, is faced with severe challenges. Over 80% of the community is illiterate, and they are ranked third-to-last in the social hierarchy. Many are landless, living on government land, and work as wage laborers in harsh conditions. They face untouchability, ethnic discrimination, and have limited access to basic needs like education, drinking water, and adequate shelter
Current Challenges in Education: The children of the Mushar community face numerous barriers to education. Poverty and illiteracy amongst adults mean that children often do not attend school due to the inability to afford schooling costs like uniforms and stationery. Many children are needed at home for domestic chores or to care for younger siblings, further reducing school attendance. The dropout rate is alarmingly high, with a vast majority not completing primary education. This situation is even more dire for girls, who are often engaged in domestic work, leading to even lower enrollment rates.
Our Project: Transforming Lives through Education: Our project aims to tackle these challenges head-on. By providing essential resources like school supplies and uniforms, and by launching initiatives like the midday meal program, we have already seen an increase in school attendance.
