Recently, Birgit had the opportunity to participate in a peer-to-peer lesson on cyber security at a school in Kathmandu. At a time when digital technologies are increasingly shaping life in Nepal, this event highlighted the importance of education. It showed how important it is to understand the challenges and opportunities of the digital world – both for young people and for society as a whole.
Cyber security: a growing issue in Nepal
The internet is no longer a luxury in Nepal either, but an everyday tool. Smartphones and social media are particularly widespread among the younger generation. However, increasing digitalization also increases the risks, such as phishing emails, insecure passwords and data misuse, to name but a few.
The peer-to-peer lesson taught the students basic skills for staying safe online. They learned how to recognize phishing emails, create secure passwords and not share them with friends or online acquaintances. Particularly important was the message that digital security requires not only technical knowledge, but also an awareness of one’s own actions.

Social media and mental health: an often underestimated risk
In addition to cyber security, the psychological effects of social media were also discussed. Platforms such as Facebook, TikTok and Instagram are extremely popular in Nepal, but they harbor dangers such as loneliness and depression. Especially young people in urban areas like Kathmandu spend a lot of time on social media, often without realizing the long-term consequences for their mental health.
The discussion showed how important it is to use social media consciously to avoid negative effects on mental health and a sense of community.

Why education is essential
Digital education is still in its infancy in Nepal. Many schools have neither the resources nor the knowledge to prepare students for the risks of the digital world. Programs like this one from Voice of Children create a much-needed foundation to give young people the necessary skills and awareness for a safe digital future.

A sign of welcome
At the end of the lesson, Birgit was invited by the principal to meet him in person. As you can see in the picture, he presented her with a traditional scarf as a sign of welcome – a heartfelt symbol of appreciation and hospitality.
Our role in the implementation
This important program was organized by VOC and could be carried out thanks to the generous support of our donors. Their contributions enable us to promote such initiatives in Nepal and raise awareness among young people about the opportunities and risks of the digital world.
We would particularly like to invite companies to support us in this area, as digital security and skills are also playing an increasingly important role in companies. Together, we can help Nepal benefit from the digital revolution and act safely and consciously.
Thank you very much for your support!
